Open Letters Monthly mourns the death of prolific and visionary comic book writer Len Wein, whose triumphs included introducing the characters Wolverine and Swamp Thing and co-creating the enormously successful 1975 revamped X-Men - but whose real genius was for scripting a layered humanity into even the cheesiest old idea. The comics world never has never had enough creators like him - he'll be badly missed.
