Open Letters Monthly mourns the death of great American novelist E. L. Doctorow, author of dozens of works, including his masterpieces Ragtime and Billy Bathgate. He was slightly nervous, slightly fussy, understatedly funny, and sly, and his books all reflected his probing impatience with his own craft.  He'll be missed.
